BOTANIST transports us back more than 70 million years to a time when dinosaurs controlled the earth and early woods started to convert to coal on their eleventh full-length album, “Paleobotany.” Numerous plants also became significantly larger than the modern-day ancestors of the giants before the asteroid Chicxulub’s catastrophic impact brought the age of giants to an abrupt end. “Paleobotany” possesses all the distinguishing qualities that make BOTANIST unique among metal bands worldwide. Lyrically, the San Francisco, California band breaks away from the typical genre clichés of Satan, dragons, and alcohol by focusing on different species of flora. Their sound is unmistakably “metal,” but the Americans’ 110-string hammered dulcimers are used in place of 6-string guitars.
