Damon McMahon of New York has revealed the details of his first Amen Dunes album in six years. The new record, Death Jokes, is Amen Dunes’ first full-length release on the venerable Seattle label. It will be available via Sub Pop on May 10. The lead track “Purple Land” by McMahon and its Julian Klincewicz-directed music video were released today. See it and the future tour dates for Amen Dunes below.
Death Jokes is the follow-up to Amen Dunes’ fantastic 2018 album Freedom. Following his signing to Sub Pop in 2021, McMahon released the one-off single “Feel Nothing,” which featured Jason Williamson of the Sleaford Mods. Death Jokes doesn’t feature the co-produced song by Ariel Rechtshaid.
In the time between releasing Freedom and writing the 14 songs for Death Jokes, McMahon gave birth to his first kid, moved from Los Angeles to Woodstock, New York, and dealt with a severe case of COVID-19. He brought in bassist Sam Wilkes and producers Christoffer Berg, Kwake Bass, Panoram, and Money Mark to help with a few of the tracks on the new album.
